Good day everyone. I hope you guys are having a great day. So I hope you enjoyed the last article I wrote on Mary and Martha which I enjoyed writing because as I write these blogs I receive healing for myself as well as more knowledge about Gods perfect will for my life. I am really excited about this blog because there’s so much the lord has shown me about Mary and us as God’s Daughter. I will focus on Mary Magdalene mostly in this blog and depending on where the Holy Spirit takes us, we might talk about Rachel and Leah and Potiphar’s wife separately, or I will talk about these other women in this blog to make a comparison with Mary. Either way I believe this blog is right for this season and very important to read in the day and age we are living in.
From Luke and all the other gospels of other four gospels we are told that Mary was on missions with Jesus and his disciples. In fact, in every place where the women are mentioned Mary Magdalene is the one who is mentioned by name every single time. So the spirit is clear in showing us she was a significant part of Jesus’ journey when he was on this earth. Which reminds me daughter of God about our significance, about yours my sis. You are part of God’s divine plan for the gospel.
Sometimes we think we need to be preachers and pastors but we don’t unless it is God’s perfect will for our lives. However, God has a good plan for you, whoever you are. He has such a wonderful plan for you and just like Mary had a beautiful part to play in helping the gospel move forward, and helping him fulfil his ministry, as she did that she also fulfilled her own ministry. Daughter of God in God’s divine plan there’s a part you play. Maybe you are a mom, a teacher, a singer or a writer and many more. The question is not whether what you are is wrong or right; it is finding out what your purpose is from God as you are in that position and giving him the glory. God will use you where you are and anywhere you are. So let’s go ahead and see what the lord wanted us to see in the scriptures about Mary. In Luke 8:1-3 there’s a lot that is said to us about the woman who travelled with Jesus. Let’s see what it says.
“After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”
In this verse we are told that Jesus cast out 7 demons out of Mary, meaning a mental, spiritual and even emotional healing had taken place. Before this we are reminded that she travelled extensively with Jesus which was as a result of the healing that had taken place. This means she was transformed and encountered God’s healing power. Showing us that nothing is too big or too small for the lord. He loves us all, and desire to help us to always walk and live in his perfect will. I like the fact that Mary and the other women that had been healed and cured of diseases stayed with him and his disciplines “helping to support them out of their means.” After her life had changed she did not go back to her old life. Mary contributed and lived a life of service to Jesus. Jesus and the disciples needed the help of Mary and these women because come to think about it, the disciples including Jesus probably needed someone to cook for them breakfast, lunch and dinner on a daily basis. They probably needed their clothes washed and for some people to look after their belongings and properties while they were ministering to the sick and oppressed with Jesus.
Now I know what you are thinking: “Sarah are you saying this is what a woman is supposed to be doing?” no that is not what I am saying, I am saying that the women dealt with specific tasks as did the men. I will give an example. In some parts of the scripture we see that the disciples often went out to look for food and like I have shown you in the previous blogs that Jesus defended women and as well as corrected them as an older brother, and as a saviour. So on one hand one can say that both parties fulfilled their role. For example, with the woman at the well, and the woman with the alabaster jar we see how Jesus really transformed women lives to be better and to grow. We can also assume that as the women fulfilled their role which was probably expected of them as it was expected for reasonable men to protect women. I am sure these women did not have to worry about protection and provision because first and foremost they had Jesus but also because the men took care of the provision side of things so together things fell into place.
Jesus was in his ministry for 3 years, meaning these women and the disciple got to really know each other as they travelled with Jesus. The point I was trying to make here is to point out the vital part the women planned in helping Jesus because of what he did for them. There’s a reason why my emphasis rests heavily on Mary. This was a woman who was healed from seven demons, she could have gone home after with her healing and never see the lord again. However, she had encountered such a change in her life that she dedicated the rest of her life to serving Jesus. This was what God called her to do. I am not saying that if you don’t go around preaching the gospel publicly that you are not following God, what this shows us is that a true encounter with the lord never keeps you the same. That when we understand what the lord has down for us we naturally give our lives to him and live out the life of God in ourselves daily. This is what Mary and all the other women did. They stuck with Jesus and followed him unto his death. Mary was committed because she had received a revelation of God’s commitment to us and it was that understanding of who Christ was that moved them to contribute towards the gospel.
Daughter of God, give God all of you, commit yours to him, tell him your faults, your hurts, your past, receive the healing that the lord Jesus has brought into your life and serve him with your whole life. This is what I see with all these women we have just talked about. We see that Mary dedicated her whole life to Jesus. We see this demonstration of love and appreciation from Mary further in Mark 15:40-41:
“Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.”
I love this description because it is showing us again the different roles the women played in this the gospel of Jesus Christ. We see that Mary was there and present as Jesus on that cross-we see here that she was present at during his suffering. This was her messiah, her saviour, one that had transformed and changed her life for ever. I see a commitment here from this scripture. Sometimes when we go through things that are devastating we shrink back from God and stop spending time with God, or we don’t read as much. However, I have learned from experiences that because God lives in us, he goes through the same things we go through. God is right where you are daughter of God, he lives in you, so talk to him, read his word, ask him to help you. I know that this is something I need to work on. I have noticed that sometimes when something happens to me that really affects me, I find it hard to pray, but that attitude only affects me because the bible tells us that we should draw near to God and he will draw near to us, and it is in prayer that we receive answers from God, or rather receive healing and comfort from the lord. Even though Jesus was on the cross, Mary still saw him as her saviour, she did not run away because things had gone wrong, she was still there. She and the other win were determined to look after their messiah because they were dedicated to him. Daughter of God we are told in john 16:33 “…In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The shouldn’t be surprised of trouble, we just need to be equipped in the word of God and strong enough in our relationship with God that when trouble comes we can handle it because we have God. This is seen clearly in Mark 15:40-41 where although Jesus was on the cross, he was such a strong foundation in Mary’s life prior to that, that her their relationship was not shaken.
There was such a beautiful relationship that I can see here between Mary and Jesus and that was that of Worship and commitment to him because she had a deep revelation that God that through Jesus God was deeply faithful and commitment to her as his daughter. Daughter of God you have seen Mary’s commitment to her lord, what is your commitment to him. Are you just going to him to give something, or are you still in love with God even when things go wrong? The reason why I am asking this is that God wants to use you, but he also wants to train you. As Mary followed Jesus on his journey and mission, she was getting trained in many different ways for example: faith, loving your enemies, organisation and most importantly the word of God. Mary fed of the word of God daily with Jesus, she was taught on a regular basis as were the other disciples and was thus able to grow. This is the same daughter of God, what are you feeding on? Who do you spend time with on a regular basis? who do you listen to? We need to spend regular time with God on a daily basis, to let him teach us in his word and to help and train us so we can move to where we need to go. Daughter of God you need God’s word daily so you can be strong every day of your journey and we see this in Mary’s example, she lived a life of worship. I am not talking about staying in the corner in your room and praying all day. I am saying you can pray to the lord anywhere you are; I am talking about the consciousness of knowing that God is with you everywhere you go because he lives in you and letting him teach and correct us his ways and his word. I am talking about living by his word, obeying him in everything and most importantly loving him with our whole heart. Let see what else the bible tells us about Mary. Mark 15:47 tells that:
So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.
I love this scripture because we are reminded again that Mary’s foundation was Jesus, due to the journey we are shown in the bible in that she followed Jesus even unto death and burial. The above scripture tells us that she saw where Jesus was buried and I believe that was for a purpose and a reason and we find out in Mark 16:7 that she and the other women returned to the tomb to anoint Jesus very early in the morning. Mary was a woman of influence and a leader, she and these women were very intentional during this time, they were still serving God even though Jesus was died at the time. I think it is interesting that when the women find out the tomb is empty; they all run off home even after the angels have told them that Jesus is risen in Mark 16:1-10 and that they should tell the others, she stays behind clearly upset still thinking that they had taken her lord away.
“they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. [[Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.”
We are then told that Jesus just appeared to Mary, but we can see that many others were at the tomb and for some the angels appeared to them but still did not believe so why was Mary different? Could it be that it depended on her heart? Jesus could have chosen to reveal to himself at the tomb while the other women or the disciples were there as we see in john 20:11-17 but he doesn’t right then even though eventually he does later on. Jesus needed a worshipper, someone whose heart was truly his, who held on to his every word, whose foundation he was, and Mary possessed those characteristics. I have said it before and I will say it again, Mary is very significant among many women that are talked about and mentioned in the new testament and I believe it is was for a purpose and a reason which was to spread his gospel. John 20: 11-18 we are shown a clearer picture of this so let see what happened:
“Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? ”They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). 17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.”
Wow how wonderful is Mary’s love for Jesus, she valued him deeply, she cared about what happened to him even his dead body. Jesus was not just someone she collected blessings from but a messiah who had transformed her from the inside. She respected him and it is no surprise that he appeared to her and revealed to her the plans ahead because of his resurrection. Mary’s love for the lord did not change because things had gone differently to what she had planned. While others fled she was there at the cross, the burial and the resurrection. It is wonderful that our love for God can have no limits? Daughter of God I want to encourage you to love God with no limits irrespective of what happens. God is not the source of your pain, he is the only that can help you. We should love him for who he is, we should love because of the great love and faithfulness he has towards us and we can see this worship from Mary. she genuinely loved the lord and I believe it was in that love and worship that naturally attracted God to work with her in his plan to save humanity. Daughter of God where is your heart? Is it with God or is it only with God when he does something for you but when something bad happens you forsake him. I think it is amazing that Jesus never stopped being her rock and foundation which is why he still appeared to her because God know it was a genuine worship and a need she had on him. This is how we should be, Jesus is our rock, and we should depend on him because the lord tells us in Jeremiah 29:13 “that You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” and this is seen clearly with Mary. And this is not to say that she went looking for him, but it was the heart, she had after Jesus, it was this constant worship she had for the lord that got her to be the first person to spread the gospel when Jesus tells her to go tell her brothers that he is risen.
Why did the lord do it like this? Apart from the fact that she was hungry for the messiah, it was also put there to show us that the lord used women in this gospel, that they had such a powerful part to play in the kingdom, in his work, that they have purpose, that God loves and values women and his daughters. Mary is such a wonderful example of worship, and commitment to the lord even in tough times. Now, we obviously might not worship him the same way she did, but we can have a heart of worship and love for the lord all the time, and that takes focus and deep desire. Mary went on to still serve the lord even after his second ascension, and I want to encourage you to keep God first in your life, to praise him every-time you can, read his word, and meditate on his word because God wants to use you, but he needs your heart. You have a purpose Daughter of God, in his kingdom there’s a part to play to accomplish his will here on earth. It could be being a success on your job, being a Godly wife and mother, a student that makes a different, a write, a preacher, a business man or woman and many more
So embrace your gifts and talents, take them to the lord and ask him how you can use them for his glory, you will be amazed at what he shows you because you are important to him and he has a wonderful plan for you like he did for Mary Magdalene and all the other women we have discussed thus far in this series. So talk to the lord about everything, listen to his word for you in the bible and as he leads you with his holy spirit, and act according to his word because will be amazed at what the lord will reveal to you. Like he revealed himself to Mary, a woman whom he cast at 7 demons and whom many Pharisees considered a sinful woman; but his word had changed her, and she became a worshipper and a true follower of Jesus Christ and that is our calling as well.
I hope you have enjoyed this blog and it has blessed you to seek the lord more in worship
God bless you.
