Lanes and Races: The Losses in Comparison, Competition, Jealousy and Inferiority

Good Evening everyone, I hope you are having a great day. It’s been a great day for me so far. I started a new job last month and I am adjusting to that, but I am working on blogging more often as the Holy Spirit downloads whatever it is that he wants me to blog on. Anyways my friend, how are you today? How has your day been? What have you been up to? Write to me in the comments section part of this blog; I would really love to hear from you. Before, I go ahead can I thank you for all your lovely comments and feedback on this blog; you guys are awesome, and I love that you are honest in telling me what you think I could do better and what you guys like and dislike but overall your feedback is so lovely, and it has helped improve my blog for the better. As you can see my site has a new look. I hope you guys like it, if you have any suggestion feel free to comment on this blog.

Okay, so let’s move on to today’s topic. Boy this topic is so important to me because this is something the lord has had to refresh me in this year, and I must share it with you. I want to talk to you about this idea of lanes and races. Do you know that there is a race you need to run in your own lane? I know it’s probably an obvious question, but you’d be amazed at how easy it is to forget this truth and one of the causes is summed up in one word and that word is: DISTRACTIONS which can come in different forms. Everybody on this earth has been given a plan for their lives by God. Everybody on this earth has an assignment given to them by God and according to Romans 8:28 everything is working together for your good because there are good plans and good works that the Lord destined long ago for you to walk in and to accomplish according to Ephesians 2:10 which says:

For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live]

I love Ephesians 2:10, I have been meditating on it for years and I will be honest with you, as long as I keep my eyes on the word and on God my life is flourishing, and I am moving in my lane, focused, joyful and content as I outdo my past. The moment I start to compare my life, gifts, talents, results and call to other people; that is when I get distracted and doubt comes in and then I must work with the holy spirit in renewing my mind in that area. As a result, I wanted to encourage you on your journey because I sense that some of God’s children are doubting their purpose, gifts, and the pace of their journey because they are looking over into someone else’s lane. This could be a friend, a leader we look up to, a social media person we follow on social media etc. However, the truth is this: God has a perfect plan for those people you might be jealous of, or comparing yourself to, and are simply walking out the plan of God that he has for them.

However, guess what, he has wonderful plans for you as well, because there’s a way the Lord wants to express himself through you that he will not necessarily express himself in another person. Yes, God is that beautiful and dynamic that he wants to express his righteousness and beauty through his children and that includes you. Do you see how wrong it is to disrespect your gift, or desires to accomplish something other than what he has for you because it might not be popular or recognised or even celebrated by man? You see according the Genesis 1:27… “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” which means God doesn’t make mistakes. So, tell me where did you get the idea, or should I say the lie that your life is not good enough, or that someone else life is better?

I know some people might believe that if they had someone else’ life they would enjoy life more but is that really the truth? There’s a lot to say here so bear with me. Firstly, we have already established that God destined you for good works, not for anybody’s glory but Jesus’ and for the gospel. That means that there’s a certain way you are created to function so imagine the frustration that is created when you try to be someone else. It is like a book trying to become a car, or a cow trying to become a parrot, it will never happen because. Furthermore, it’s like an orange tree trying to be an apple tree; no matter how much it tries it will never happen (by the way I have written a children’s book on this by the way out this December so look out for it). The same with you; you are perfect the way God created you, and there are plans and treasures on the inside of you to bring forth. This could be: to build Christian schools all around the world; it could be write books, or comics; or open a bible museum in the UK; it could be to pastor a church someday; own a business that aids Christian organisations; write materials for children or to make films that inspire others. So, if you abandon that because you think what you have on the inside of in not as important it will only lead to frustration.

Secondly, there people that only you can reach in your world or sphere of contact that you can impact and preach the gospel of Jesus to, and they need you to rise up to who you really are. The world is waiting for a hero like you, they are waiting to see and hear authenticity in you. The world desires to see someone who is free and happy to be themselves because let’s be honest isn’t that what people are hungering for? To be themselves and accepted? To be authentic to the destiny God has for them? Even though some might not know him, there’s a deep knowing in them that something is missing and that’s where you come in in showing them Jesus, and the fact that he plans for us are real and they are good but how can you be authentic if you are trying to be someone else? For instance, God tells you in Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you [and approved of you as My chosen instrument], And before you were born I consecrated you [to Myself as My own]; I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” God knew you before you were substance in your mother’s womb because you are a spirit being he created with purpose and intention. He prepared a beautiful purpose for you and that of others. They are ordained to prosper in their lane not in yours. And you are ordained to prosper in your lane not anybody else’s. Do you want to be successful? Choose to become the best of you, not your friend, or your sister or your boyfriend, or girlfriend etc. You friend are a mighty warrior, a precious rare cut diamond, son and daughter of the living God and there is a specific purpose he has put in you to accomplish because God needs you on this earth to reach as many people for Jesus as possible in the capacity he has for you which is unique to you.

I will be honest, this was a struggle for me this past summer. I cannot tell you when I got my eyes off my lane and my purpose because it was not as if I stopped doing the things I normally do for the Lord but my heart started to change and it started to grow in discontentment because I started questioning God’s plan and call for my life. You see, I became inpatient with the Lord because I wanted to see certain results in my life and if I am honest with you it was because I was comparing my results to someone else’s results wondering why I have not been promoted in a specific area or why things are not happening as fast as they are happening for someone else. The enemy used that discontentment and I unconsciously let go of Gods hand in our journey together and I found myself going in someone else’s lane trying to run their race. I still had intimacy and close fellowship with him but at the same time I was distracted with the notion that I was behind, that I wasn’t where I should be because I was looking at other people’s successes and comparing it to my own- deeming mine lower, which can lead to other emotions such as rivalry, jealousy, low self-esteem and many more.

The funny thing is: is that it was so subtle that I didn’t even realize it until the Holy Spirit showed me that I needed to focus on what he called me to do not what he called others to do. He reminded me that its all about Jesus not people; or a stage or impressing anybody but him. Its about becoming who he created me to be, winning souls for Jesus and loving him with my whole heart. Paul also shares this thought with us in Philippians 3:12-14 saying:

I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

Do you see that our focus should be Christ not others? Before we go forward, I need you to know something about me and that is I am a supporter, an encourager, I love to cheer people on, so I am not saying that we become selfish and only focus on ourselves. It’s important that we support others, cheer them on, help them on their journey but it is also important that as we do those things we don’t take our eyes off Jesus. Let me be honest with you: God is not going to help you, equip you or anoint you to be someone else. He is not interested in that. Think about how it must be for God, he created a creature like you according to 2 Corinthians 5:17, and planned out a wonderful life for that creature, and fashioned it for a specific lane, ordained its pace of movement in the journey of faith to faith for only this creature to say: “actually I don’t like this life I want another” or “to say the gifts you gave me God are not good enough.” God knows best, he knows how you can function on this earth and he made you from his infinite perfect wisdom and our God doesn’t make mistakes, so we are the ones that need to align with him and his leading.

What happens when you take your eyes of Jesus and his word which is what Hebrews 12:2 tells not to do, and focus on what other people are doing, we stop in our lane and there’s no movement. In fact, one can even say, that we can venture off and find ourselves in someone else’s lane that was not fashioned for us and we wonder why we are struggling in becoming someone else or worse we ask ourselves how we got here. Psalms 119:105 tells us that the word of God is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, not other people’s gifts or successes. They are an inspiration to us, and a beautiful reminder for us to also remember we can do great things also but not for us to compare ourselves and be jealous of. So, I ask you, what are you basing your success, value or purpose on? Is it the fact that someone is winning in a certain area and you think you are not? Who said you were not winning anyways because according to the word of God we have the victory in Christ Jesus and Romans 8:37 says we are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus.

Another thing that happens when you have your eyes focused on someone else’s success or purpose instead learning from that person and enjoying their gifts and talents; is that we can stop moving in our journey and we might not even know it. This is where the enemy can come in and start planting seeds of envy, jealousy, bitterness or inferiority in your heart. You may unconsciously start thinking someone is better than you or that your better than someone else because you are basing your success on the outside appearances and the results you see in your life or theirs, but success is based on your intimacy and surrender with the Holy Spirit and becoming everything the word of God says you are as well as becoming the best of you. This is where people can feel like they are behind or purposeless, without passion or influence but that’s not true. The issue is not that others are making more impact than you or are more successful than you, the issue is that you stopped growing the moment you decided that your call is not as good as someone else and worse you stopped doing what God told you to do and are trying to do what he told someone else to do because for now it might get more attention or applause. But here’s the thing, even if man doesn’t applaud you, God does every day. Besides, God will always find people to love and honour you, that’s a promise. The question you need to ask yourself is this; did what I do impact someone to love Jesus more or to give their heart to him? That’s what really matters at the end of the day. Its souls, souls and more souls into the kingdom.

What avenue has God put in your heart to reach the lost? It is to pastor a church, to start a blog, or write and perform a spoken word, to make films and videos for the master’s glory, to start a bakery, to preach the gospel with art? Etc. Whatever it is do it passionately working under one and that is our Master Jesus. You can also speak to your leader about it, so they can guide you. I will give you an example, if I can remember I have always loved to teach but when I became born again the lord called me to teach the word in different forms i.e. teaching the word in cell or church, blogging, writing books, poetry, plays and films but I have struggled over the last couple of years because I tried to mix my purpose with having a career (not that there is anything wrong with having a career by the way). But, you know society has formed a way of how life should be according in this world which is different to that of the Lord. So, for years I tried to go back to university so that I can become a teacher because in my head I thought I will still be accomplishing my purpose since I will be teaching. I have had three attempts to go back to university with offers from all of them, but something always didn’t feel right, it just didn’t work out because it wasn’t where I was supposed to be, but someone could do it and it will work for them if that’s what God desires for them. You just cannot compare your life to someone else, but you can learn from it for sure, be led by the Holy Spirit and seek advice from people you trust and those who watch over you.

I remember I made one application to study a MA in bible studies because in my head I wanted to accomplish Gods call in the form of a teacher or lecturer that way I get paid i.e. have a career because preaching the gospel at the time seemed risky. I thought I would be teaching the word of God anyways so why not? I know you are probably judging me but hey we all have a journey and our stories are different. The truth is that the closer you get to the Spirit of God the more you desire his will over yours. As I read Gods word and fell deeper in love with Jesus; I realized that I felt most alive when I preach the gospel and when I teach the word of God. When I preach and teach I come alive, I feel so much pleasure and its natural for me and I can no longer ignore it, hence I blog, write on my Instagram, write poetry and books as well as preach to the young adults in our church. I am in my centre of God’s for my call and I couldn’t be happier, but I also must consciously make sure that I don’t compare my call to anybody. So, I tell you, you are great, you are chosen and loved entirely and yes others are great and accomplishing great things but so are you if you look hard enough you will see all the wonderful things you can do well that others appreciate and are inspired by. Look at Ephesians 1:4-7 and see what the lord says about you:

“…just as [in His love] He chose us in Christ [actually selected us for Himself as His own] before the foundation of the world, so that we would be holy [that is, consecrated, set apart for Him, purpose-driven] and blameless in His sight. In love he predestined and lovingly planned for us to be adopted to Himself as [His own] children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the kind intention and good pleasure of His will— to the praise of His glorious grace and favor, which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved [His Son, Jesus Christ].

So, my sister, my brother, stay in your lane, for it is covered in grace and abilities. Your race is tailored and structured just for you. Jeremiah 29:11 says the plans God has for you are very good and my advice will be for you to hold unto this truth and never let go because distractions will come. We are one body of Christ and we all serve a function like our physical body does. Some of the people you admire or might be jealous of are the mouth in the body of Christ while you are the arm or the legs or the voice or the face etc. but they must work together, and one can do without the other. Have a look at 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 it puts it perfectly:

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves  or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.

So, whatever functions you play in the body of Christ be proud and happy with it for you are destined to succeed at it if you keep your eyes on Jesus and become all he destined you to be.

I will write more on this in the future but for now I pray that this blog has blessed you.

I love you and I am praying for you

Love Sarah
